Grow French Beans in Pots – How to Prepare Your Soil and Plants for Early Harvest
French Beans are among one of the easiest vegetables to grow and enjoy. They taste great and are very nutritious. French Beans also called pole beans, green beans or field beans. It’s primarily native to South America, where it’s been a part of many people’s diets for centuries. Some folks say that it was brought to Europe by the escaped slaves during the rule of Elizabeth I. Others say it’s been growing in Latin America forever.
You’ll need fertile, well-drained soil to grow French beans. Before planting, make sure the soil has good drainage and it’s not too wet or too dry. Planting depth should be three to four times deeper than the topsoil. It should be planted about a foot below the level of the topsoil. The tall roots of French beans should be dug up in order to provide room for the expanding root system of the plant as it grows.
The French beans’ leaves should be about 2.5 inches long and thin. They should be arranged on the stem about one inch apart. The flowers on the plant are large, about four inches in diameter, with lavender to purple tones. The petals have a slight curve to them, making them easier to identify.
Growing pole beans and French beans are similar to growing spinach and other vegetables. However, you’ll need to add fertilizer to your soil to help nurture the plant as it grows. Once the pole beans sprout, you’ll have a continuous supply of fresh vegetables for dinner, drinks and snacks throughout the day. Because the plant grows in a short space, you should be able to pick the produce from each stem easily. Pole beans and French beans make an excellent combination for the gardener who likes to grow their own vegetables.
When you begin planting, select a location that allows for good drainage. Keep in mind that French beans are taller than pole beans so be careful not to cover the entire plant. For a successful yield, seedlings should be sowed in rows about one to two feet apart. After planting, keep in mind that you should always add additional soil each month to allow the plant to develop a strong root system.
The key to growing French beans successfully is to keep the temperatures of your area consistent. In addition, it is important to provide a sufficient amount of sunlight for the plants to grow healthy. The beans will go dormant during periods of high winter temperatures but they will begin to bloom again during full sun hours. The best times to plant are spring and fall.
If the seeds are not sown early, they may not sprout at all. During the colder months, the growing bean seeds stay dormant until the warm summer months. When the weather turns hot, the tiny green beans shoot up to become hardy little plants. In order to encourage seed production you should repot your plants every two or three months during this period. If you have many plants, kept them all at the same time in the summer.
In order for the plant to grow successfully, you should place the seedlings in well-drained soil with plenty of sunshine. The area you choose to plant should receive an adequate amount of nutrients and water, but avoid excessively dry conditions. Make sure that the surface you are planting is flat and well-drained. Be sure to evenly distribute the weight of each plant over the entire soil. When it comes to growing French beans in containers, the best way to have them thrive is to follow a regular maintenance schedule. This means providing them with a healthy diet of greens and other natural, organic matter in order to give them the energy and vitality they need to grow into healthy, full-size plants.
